Computers are changing the way we live!

As much as Swiftweb continues to be the premier provider of a constantly increasing range of innovative internet solutions to our customers and community, sometimes, it is impossible not to marvel at how computers are changing the way we live, work, and generally function.

The other day, a relative found me on facebook and sent a request, using her I-phone. Just so you get some perspective on the situation, she is not a day older than 8 years old. I mean, it took me a while to find my way around a “Mulika Mwizi“, but now 8-year-olds are able to use I-phones…

Honestly speaking, Facebook only became a reality for me when I was in high school….

Perhaps this has to do with the fact that that it came out when I was at that stage in my life, (now you have a vague idea of how ol- I mean young I am) and goodness knows I tried not to go with the crowd… But I really couldn’t help myself; everyone was at it!

So a few years down the line, it is really no wonder that she (my young relative) would have already discovered how to get onto facebook and is more than able to go around and commit atrocities such as attempting to add me!

Another (funny!) situation was my niece. She rang her aunt with her mother’s phone while she was in bed and supposed to be in lalaland. She’s barely out of diapers! Yes, you read right! And that, I have absolutely zero explanations for.

Can you remember what life was like without computers?

Take a second and think of the days when the very pervasive force that is computers didn’t exist. Can you remember?

I know I can’t!

Matter of fact, I find it hard to think of the days people would meet up and they didn’t have mobile phones. What if you couldn’t make it and had to cancel? What would happen then? Would the other party have to wait endlessly with absolutely zero idea of what is going on?

I know, I know, I’ve been tainted: I honestly couldn’t live like that!

It is important to mention though the fact that the term “computers” here refers to anything that makes life EASIER. From your mobile phone to your dish washers and washing machines, to talking fridges and self driving cars and even the revolutionary computers that keep people alive (such as ventilators which compose a part of the much larger life support genre) and so on and so forth!

The list is virtually (pun intended) endless!

How did we ever survive without them?

Think about it, in a day, how many of these devices do you come across? We won’t even go that far, just from the moment you wake up, to the point where you get into the office.

Let’s face it; Computers are changing the way we live. Soon, they will become unavoidable. Actually, who am I kidding, we’re basically at that point! Let us not cheat ourselves and face reality: it only gets worse from here!

So, if you’re not with it, do yourself a favour and get with it!

If you own a small business, you are missing out on the opportunities that computers are creating for you and your business. Coupled with social media, technology could be the link that you are looking for!

If you are feeling lost and scared, don’t worry! (Trumpets!) Swiftweb will help you create and maintain your very own website, social media pages, host your email and much more… You name it! We are here to help you decipher the complicated world that is technology and make sure you get with it!

It’s time to let go!

To me, losing a phone is almost as bad as a break up!

I like to think I am a very simple and practical human being.

I’m not all about the flashy phones. If it makes calls and sends sms’s, it’s fine!

I’m not about the flashy cars. If it gets you from point A to B without breaking down, it’s fine!

I’m not about the flashy clothes either! If it covers all the …interesting… bits then it’s all FINE!

But recently, my oh-so-loyal phone had the equivalent of a stroke.

It went off a series of times without claiming low battery and when I finally managed to revive it, the in-built speaker that allows you to hear what the person on the other end of the line is saying had ceased to function. Thus breaking rule number 1: If it makes calls and sends sms’s, then it’s fine!

Is it just me that this happens to?

I get really attached to my phones. I mean, they are that thing that’s always by your side. Come rain, sleet, shine or snow… Or even solar flares! They get you out of sticky situations and you can always count on them being there when you wake up in the morning, regardless of what might have happened the previous night. They wake you up without fail (even when you really don’t want to!) and more importantly, they allow you to communicate with the people you hold dear (and even the one’s you don’t! and the latter are always in plenty!)

Phones are loyal, faithful and trustworthy. Sad to say, I’m not sure that I can say the same about a few of the people I’ve crossed paths with!

But my phones are more, much more than that. Since I am a writer, they act as my inspiration sometimes (like this particular article!) and because they go everywhere with me, I tend to write my article ideas and any other Eureka! moments I might have down in them. They literally hold a part of me. Is it just me that this happens to?

What’s worse?

In my life, I’ve only had one phone stolen off me. And I was devastated. Not because the phone was particularly nice or anything, but because it was something I cherished. I’m having a little trouble deciding what’s worse though; being forced to start from scratch after a phone has been mercilessly ripped away from you or having to switch phones and lay the old to rest as you begin to develop a new and interesting relationship and understanding with the next one. Sometimes I feel as though losing a phone is like a break-up! And getting to understand the new phone is like the beginning of a relationship!

Back to the matter at hand

I’m actually rather devastated by this sad turn of events! I mean, I know the people around me will be excited to hear it because it was a Nokia 1680c that I’ve had for over 4 years now (it was doing badly)! But this phone has been there for me, even when I did get other phones that didn’t work out. It’s been used by my brother and one of my best friends when they were stuck and phoneless… I remember how I felt when I first got that phone. I was ecstatic but now, it’s time for me to let go.

The  question of how to choose a new phone with all this tech and all these choices out there will be the next article so stick around!

And don’t forget to comment!

Choosing THE right domain name!

Choosing THE right domain name!

For those of you who are anything like me, you like to see the whole picture of something before you get down to the nitty-gritty. So, this article will guide those of us who are not very sure about how to go about creating and choosing the right domain name. We at Swift Web technologies specialize in this so you have absolutely nothing to worry about!

Let’s make sure it is clear!

First and foremost, there are many different types of domains! So, let us be clear, we are talking about domains in the computer context. By the time you have decided you want a domain name, you probably already know what a domain is! If so, skip right to the next step! For those of us who don’t though and would like to know, www.dictionary.reference.com says that a domain (in computer terms) is: “a group of computers and devices on a network that are administered under the same protocol” or, “the top level in a name, indicating the type of organization, geographical location, or both, and officially designated in the suffix, as .com for commercial enterprises in the U.S.” The definition we will work with is the latter definition. We must also realize that there are two components of a domain: the entire domain name (e.g. http://www.swiftweb.co.ke) and the latter part, the suffix (.co.ke).

How to find out which domain suffixes are available to you.

Computer Hope has a very good suffix database that is listed country by country. This means that some suffixes are available simply because of your geographical location. That is not to say, however, that the only one(s) listed for your country is/ are the only one(s) available to you. For instance, we at Swift Web Technologies can provide the following suffixes in Kenya:
.com; .net; .org; .biz; .go.ke; .ac.ke; .sc.ke; .info.ke; .me.ke; .mobi.ke; .co.ke; .ne.ke; .or.ke.

What determines the suffix you are going to use?

Although the choice is ultimately yours, the type of suffix you choose does send a message out to the world. There are characteristic suffixes that are used for particular companies, businesses or organizations. As you are well aware, .com is the most common and actually stands for.commercial! .or.ke is more often than not going to be an organization, probably an NGO. .mobi.ke is likely to be a mobile company website and in Kenya, .ac.ke is likely to represent an educational institution.

Although these rules are not cast in steel, choosing a suffix largely depends on what message you want to send out about your company!

How to choose the right domain name!

Once you have chosen your suffix, you can go ahead and choose the right domain name. The best way to go about this is to use your registered company, business or organization name. This is because interested parties (clients and the likes!) will find it easier to remember your website if you maintain it as your business name! Case in point, if we at Swift Web hadn’t maintained our website as www.swiftweb.co.ke, and had we used http://www.happyscreamers.com, very few people would remember it! Not to mention the fact that many people would question our credibility. If you don’t want to use your business name, you can use something relevant to what it is you do!

Also, when someone runs a search on any search engine with words that are relevant to your company or what it is you do, if you do it right, your website should appear on the first few pages of the search and bring more traffic right to you!
